How to get published
It’s really hard to get published! So I can’t tell you ‘the procedure’. Joining a writers’ group is my number one advice.
I suggest you write heaps (you love writing, don't you?) and work on the manuscripts until the writers’ group think they are ready to submit, which is subjective anyway. You could then start submitting it to publishers (according to their website instructions for submissions) and see if they reply. For American publishers you need to have an agent. In Australia and UK we can submit directly but editors pay more attention to submissions from agents.
It usually takes commitment, hard work and perseverance to get a book published with a traditional publisher. Most publishers are sent hundreds of manuscripts every year and only publish a handful of manuscripts. They are most keen to publish books written by authors they have already published.
I love the book Writing Picture Books by Ann Whitford Paul. There are also writing courses, such as through the Australian Writers' Centre, NSW Writers' Centre, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and similar organisations. See the links below. Get involved in the writing community, make friends with other writers, read blogs, newsletters, books about writing and enter competitions. Read books in your genre.
I also recommend getting to know the commissioning editors personally and doing paid consultations before submitting stories. There are lots of festivals and conferences, such as CYA Conference, KidLitVic 'Meet the Publishers', NSWWC Kids & YA festival, SCBWI Conference and 'Writers Unleashed' Shire Writers' Festival. Scroll down for links.
Omega Writers is a Christian network group which has an annual conference. COW (Children's Omega Writers) is for any Christians writing for children and young adults, whether you are writing Christian books or for the general market.
Here is some fantastic advice for writers from Mem Fox, Jackie French, CBCA and the Australian Society of Authors.
